HIDDEN MAN

  Hidden Man was produced as a collaboration between director Del Hamilton's Seven Stages and UGA's Department of Theatre and Film Studies. Our Cellar Theatre hosted the world premiere of this piece about the relationship between the famed folk artist Howard Finster and aspiring artist Robert Scherer.

  Almost every piece of the set involved a collaborative design process. Austin Butler (the set designer), Del Hamilton, and I worked as a team to realize the script's complex and dreamlike environs. The mirror piece, also know as the Temple of Sodomy, went through several incarnations before it was able to be spray-painted on and shot with a gun during each performance.

  The bike tower was one of the more challenging pieces in the design. It was made to emulate a tower that Finster created in Paradise Gardens, but this piece needed to be simple enough for actors to take apart and rebuild on set as well as sturdy enough for them to hang bikes from and ultimately climb on top of.

  The director was interested in having set-pieces that doubled as musical instruments. We came up with the idea for a playable screen-door harp and I brought it to life by stretching piano strings inside of an aluminum door frame. The door, along with the rest of the porch piece, was then faced with salvaged 1950's barn lumber.

  The angels I painted were a big hit amongst the cast, and at one point the director considered selling them at the door. A few trips to some of my favorite local junk shops yeilded a bounty of interesting props and set decoration. All of the bike parts were generously donated by my good friends at Ben's Bikes in Athens.
